Bachelor of Arts in Ethnic Studies with a Concentration in African American Studies

The Bachelors degree program in Ethnic Studies with a concentration in African American Studies offers students an interdisciplinary foundation in the history, culture, and contemporary social realities of African-descended peoples in the United States and across the African diaspora. Through this concentration, students gain a deeper understanding of race relations, systems of power, and contemporary issues such as the criminal justice system, education, and mental health. Coursework emphasizes strong analytical and communication skills—preparing students to engage effectively in diverse professional and community settings.

A major or minor in Ethnic Studies with a concentration in African American Studies complements a wide range of fields, including psychology, criminal justice, sociology, communications, and business. Many AFAM students pursue double majors or pair their primary major with an AFAM minor, expanding their knowledge and skill set while learning to apply the critical tools of Ethnic Studies within their communities and future career paths.
